The whole of the fourth movement, when he has effectively all the upper woodwinds and upper strings playing this whirling semiquaver pattern in unison and it genuinely sounds terrifying. In the third movement, after this big thick string texture, he has just the flutes playing polyphically with the harp playing this really simple accompaniment. In the first movement, using the piano and pizzicato basses as an accompaniment to tutti horns to create this sort of industrial sound. A couple of my favourite examples from his fifth symphony (simply because it's the only one I have the score of) are: He brings about some of the most suitable and interesting textures. I also prefer his version of sonata form (having the first subject in the exposition come back last in the recapitulation) to the original version. His best symphonies have everything from the most beautiful transcendent slow movements to the most sarcastically triumphant brass sections. In the last 100 years (in my opinion) I don't think there has been a better composer for symphonies than Shostakovich. Symphonies, cantatas, suites, symphonic poems, that sort of thing.
I could probably talk about how much I love his music for days but I'll keep it short on here.įirstly my favourite form of works are the large scale orchestral ones. Shostakovich for a couple of reasons I'll quickly highlight.
